I read 37 blogs about dementia and caregiving, and not one of them mentioned treatments. Something amazing is happening in dementia research, but no one seems to know about it.

Multiple red light therapy studies have had remarkable successes decreasing dementia symptoms. One study showed significant reductions in angry outburst, increased abilities to sleep, and reduced attempts to wander away. Light therapy is a non-invasive modality with few to no side effects that has a hugely positive effect on brain-based diseases.

Light therapy (or “photobiomodulation” as it’s now called) is clinically proven to alleviate symptoms of depression, Parkinson’s, dementia and brain injury. It triggers energy production at the cellular level, allowing the brain and body to heal themselves.

The latest study was published in July of 2021 and here are some of the results:

  • The mini mental state exam (“Where are we?” “What month is it?”) scores increased 21%
  • The clock drawing skill test scores improved by 20.5%
  • The ability to stay on task scores increased 23.5%
  • The ability to name objects (Boston Naming Test) improved by 35.3%

I will show you several brain photobiomodulation (light therapy) studies. I will show you the specifications used in the studies, and the specifications used in home brain lights.

The FDA Rules Protect You From Scammers, but Hide the Truth About Health Breakthroughs, Too

I live in the US, where the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibits marketers from making claims about a device’s medical benefits. The rules protect consumers from bogus claims. Unfortunately, the rules also protect consumers from valid claims. So, rather than tell you what the brain lights can and cannot do, I will break the information into two parts:

  • Look at what the science says about the effect of light therapy on the brain
  • Look at the brain therapy lights for sale, comparing their specifications to those used in the successful brain studies.

You may draw your own conclusions.

The Vielight brain lights use 810 nm infrared. We are fortunate that it’s not necessary to have the exact right wavelength to get healthy changes. In fact, it’s unlikely that any LED device is outputting just one wavelength. Instead, LEDs output a range of wavelengths around the target. An 810 nm device might output light from 800 to 820 nm. The body and brain respond to ranges of wavelengths, making these brain studies relevant to someone considering purchasing a Vielight 810 nm brain light.

Gulf War Illness Study

Researchers tested the effects of the Vielight Neuro Alpha photobiomodulation device on Gulf War Illness (GWI) symptoms. GWI symptoms include persistent headaches, cognitive difficulties, joint pain, musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems. Because the pattern can present in non-Gulf War veterans, the phenomenon is also called Chronic Multisymptom Illness (CMI).

A CMI diagnosis is 6 months of symptoms in at least two of these categories:

  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Cognitive and Mood Problems

The “Kansas” Gulf War Illness is defined as moderately severe or multiple chronic symptoms in at least three of these categories:

  • Fatigue/Sleep Problems
  • Pain
  • Neurological, Cognitive or Mood Problems
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Gastrointestinal Problems
  • Skin Problems

Gulf War Illness patients experience decreased anxiety, depression, pain, headache and PTSD symptoms.

Subjects took self-assessment questionnaires and cognitive tests. They tested before treatment and at the 12-week mark. Gulf War Veteran 1 (GWV1) presented as a Kansas GI. Gulf War Veteran 2 (GWV2) presented as Kansas GWI. Subjects used the Vielight Neuro Alpha device daily for 12 weeks. The device delivers:

  • 810 nm 100 mW/cm^2 pulsed at 10 Hz to 3 posterior transcranial targets
  • 810 nm 75 mW/cm^2 pulsed at 10 Hz to an anterior target
  • 810 nm 25 mW/cm^2 pulsed at 10 Hz to an intranasal passage

At 12 weeks both subjects improved on multiple scores. GWV1 no longer qualified as Kansas GWI. He was re-categorized as mild-moderate CMI.

Traumatic Brain Injury Case

One 23-year old traumatic brain injury patient complained of headaches, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. He home-treated with a Vielight Neuro Alpha and Neuro Gamma.

Results

At an 8 week measurement he had:

  • increased brain volume
  • improved functional connectivity
  • increased cerebral profusion (blood flow)
  • impvement neuropsychological test scores

Parkinson’s Clinical Study

Groups were tested before and after PBM treatment on measures:

  • Functional Mobility task of Time Up and Go (TUG): Stand, walk 3 m, turn, return, sit down
  • Gait TUG Motor: First task plus carrying water
  • Gait TUG Cognitive: First task plus counting backwards in twos
  • Gait TUG 10 Meter Walk: Time to walk 14 meters after having already walked 2 meters

Parkinsonson’s patients experience increased mobility, balance, and cognitive abilities.

Results

Participants in both groups saw significant improvement in:

  • functional mobility
  • dynamic balance
  • cognition

Dementia Study

A 2017 study in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found improved dementia symptoms after 810 nm infrared transcranial and intranasal irradiation of five patients using Vielight 810 and Neuro LED devices.

The patients received 20 or 25 minute treatments of 810 nm pulsed at 10 Hz over 12 weeks.

The Vielight 810 is an intranasal device. The Neuro is transcranial and intranasal.

Light reached “bilateral mesial prefrontal cortex, precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex, angular gyrus, and hippocampus.”

Dementia subjects experienced fewer sleep interruptions, angry outbursts, less anxiety, and reduced wandering.

Results included dementia improvement of:

Vielight Light Therapy in the Nose and on the Head

Vielight’s light therapy device shine light up on the nostril (intransal) and on the head (transcranial). Both light delivery methods have clinical studies supporting their use.

Helping the Body Through the Nostrils (Intransal)

The light shining up the nostrils reaches a dense web of blood vessels. The cells absorb the light and arteries take the treated blood throughout the body. Depending on the model, the light reaches the network of vessels above the nose, or it goes thorugh the network to the brain.

All intranasal models are “systemic” because they all irradiate the cells in the dense network above the nasal passages. The “systemic” and the “brain” devices treat these cells above the nose and send the treated cell throughout the body. The “brain” lights leave some of their photons at the vessels, and the rest travel to the brain.

Helping the Brian through the Scalp (Transcranial)

Depending on the model, some Vielight devices deliver light through the forehead, top of the head, sides of the head, and the back of the head. The photons travel through the skin, skull and blood. Only a percentage of the light sent makes it all the way to the brain. The science shows that the quantity of light is sufficient for profound benefits in dementia, Parkinson’s and brain injury patients.

Vielight Red Body Lights

Vielight’s red light devices treat the body but not the brain. The red 633 nm and 655 nm wavelength Vielight devices treat the blood vessels above the nose. Those cells travel throughout the body. These two lights don’t send light directly to the brain.

Vielight Infrared Brain Lights

Vielight’s infrared devices send light through the nose (intranasal) and the head (transcranial) to the brain. These models delivery photons to the brain tissue. The intranasal light sends photons through that dense blood vessel area above the nose, treating those cells in the process. The light that reaches the brain through the nose and through the scalp have shown profound effects on health in published studies and case reports.

Vielight Therapeutic Pulsing

Pulsing means that the light turns on, off, and on again. Some studies and anecdotal evidence point to pulsing as having an even more powerful effect than non-pulsing lights. Pulsing turns off the energy delivery, which results in a cooler delivery of light. Heat can damage tissue, so pulsing the light protects the tissue from heating up. Pulsing also “entrains” the brain waves. The brain’s electrical signals follow the light’s pulse rate. Studies have shown that entraining the brain waves to 10 Hz produces an alpha state of relaxation and even sleepiness. Pulsing at 40 Hz entrains the brain waves to a mentally focused and alert state.
